The Red Storm Rises: St. John’s Basketball Team’s Dominant Run to the NCAA Tournament
The 2022-2023 season was one for the books for the St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball team. With a passionate fan base and a renewed sense of purpose, the Johnnies rode a 12-game winning streak to the NCAA Tournament, their first appearance since 2015.
Under the guidance of head coach Mike Anderson, the Red Storm tweaks and tweaks to their system, the team found its rhythm, clicking on all cylinders as the Big East Conference schedule wore on. They would ride that momentum all the way to the bracket’s Starkville Regional, where they would face off against the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, and Gonzaga in pursuit of a deep run in the tournament.
The turnaround was nothing short of astounding. At the season’s midpoint, the Red Storm found themselves mired in a 2-5 start, with many whispering about the end of an era for the program. But Anderson, a storied coach with a wealth of NCAA experience, saw something in his team that few others did – potential. He tweaked the rotation, emphasized defense, and encouraged his players to trust the process.
And boy, did they ever.
As the wins piled up, so did the confidence. From last season’s finish (8-9) to this year’s tear, the Red Storm never looked back. Led by senior guard Jaizen "J-Dawg" Duncan, who averaged 18.2 points per game, the team hovered just shy of 75 points per contest, a bonafide top-20 ranking in the nation.
The mid-season resurgence saw the introduction of a feared press, which opponents struggled to handle. The Red Storm swarmed the ball, forcing foes into 17.1 turnovers per game, good for fifth in the country. This aggressive approach allowed for a number of momentum-shifting scoring runs, often changing the complexion of the contest in an instant.
As the regular season drew to a close, the Red Storm solidified their status as a contender. A pair of 11-point victories over Marquette and DePaul bookended a decisive win over tenth-ranked Xavier, sealing a second-place finish in the Big East. The Johnnies then knocked off six-seed Cincinnati in the conference tournament’s quarterfinals, coming from behind to force overtime on a clutch trey from Duncan.
That stage set the table for another statement win, this time in the NCAA’s Midwest Regional. A narrow, 67-65 victory over the Crimson Tide in the round of 32 guaranteed St. John’s a Sweet 16 appearance, a feat first achieved in program history since 2000.
"This program has come a long way," Anderson reflected in a post-game press conference. "Our guys have bought in, and they’re now reaping the rewards. March Madness is all about excitement, and we’re thrilled to be part of it."
The journey isn’t over, however. The Red Storm await the winner of the Alabama-Maryland tilt in the regional semifinals, a chance to etch their names in the annals of NCAA history. As they’ve proved time and time again, the St. John’s Red Storm are not ones to back down from a challenge.
With their backs against the wall, the Red Storm are ready to unleash their fury upon the tournament stage. Can they go all the way? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – this squad will not go down without a fight.
